2018 Summer Mission Trip - Appalachia
June 17th - June 23rd, 2018
Cedar Grove, West Virginia
Students must be 12 years of age or older!
Your experience will be rich and historical, as you make new friends whom you’ll never forget and make real, practical differences in someone’s life. You will be hard pressed to and a more appreciative resident than when you work for a West Virginian.
We will paint, insulate, and caulk openings to keep out the harsh winters. Ramps, porches, and other accessibility challenges are also conquered. A complete skirting project can keep a trailer safer and warmer. We can even lay on some roof coat to make sure a home is dry. Whatever you end up doing, it will be appreciated – you will be amazed how little things mean a lot.
We have committed to working with them through the lean times that seem to grip the programs in the Appalachians. They are well known for programs assisting the elderly and youth of the community. They have a long-standing YouthBuild program that helps young people hone skills and prepare for success in the trades.
The school is large and long as a traditionally designed school that used to be one of several high schools during the coal industry heyday. The classrooms do have air conditioning and lots of space to meet. The gym is huge but warm as they need to cool it with fans and ceiling vents. Don’t worry though, the valley open experiences cool breezes.
At the Cedar Grove, WV Workcamp, your group will demonstrate Jesus’ love and compassion in tangible ways, serving real people in need while working on projects like...
• Building wheelchair ramps and handrails
• Fixing leaky roofs
• Weatherizing homes and trailers
• Reconstructing sagging porches
• Sign painting projects
• Interior and exterior carpentry
• Other home repair projects that the homeowner cannot
While your youth group is at camp, they’ll be just a quick drive to downtown Charleston, the largest and capital city of West Virginia. Head a few minutes in any direction from there, and you’ll be in some cool state parks and in lush, green Kanawha County with its rolling green Appalachia mountains, winding streams, and pockets of small communities.
Cedar Grove is located about 20 minutes outside of Charleston, WV. Catch a WV Power baseball game at Appalachian Power Park. Take a picnic or catch a free concert at Haddad Riverfront climbing at ACE Adventure Resort. Many other fun things to do in Charleston, WV too!
